We want to make your experience as smooth as possible. Before you come in to place an order or browse there is some information that is helpful to bring along with you. Again, if you have any questions feel free to give us a call, but on this page we will answer some basic questions we get!
What is MDF?
Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood.
Should I use MDF or Wood?
My general rule of thumb is if you plan on painting your moulding and the area is properly vented and does not usually see a lot of moisture MDF is more than adequate. Properly painted MDF is durable. However, not properly painted in an area with moisture such as a bathroom or on tile floors that are regularly moped the MDF will absorb moisture, and expand.
Are there standard sized doors?
Generally speaking no. Please understand we provide material for new homes and older homes and encounter a wide range of sizes in width and height. Interior doors are made 6'8" tall or 8' tall (7' special order on select styles and take 4-8 weeks to ship to us), but they can be anywhere from 12"-36" wide.
Doors come 1-3/8" or 1-3/4". If you are wanting a 20 Minute Fire Rated door and your existing door is an 1-3/8" you will have to replace the jambs. All fire doors are 1-3/4. In order to order a door that has the Fire Rated tag you will need to bring in the old door or measurements off the door (these doors can not be cut in our shop they must be ordered to specification).
